To tell the truth, all the information I’ve attributed to her is stitched together from a few different sources and I just filled in any gaps. After I found my spirit animal (the moth) I researched whether it was a traditional spirit animal in any culture and luckily it was so that’s where I found the lions share of it’s traits.
Light Grey Art Lab were kind enough to supply us with a bunch of useful web links to possible research material so I just went through those until I found one that appealed to me. From that research I decided to make my moth a vörðr which is a warden spirit in Norse mythology because I have Scandinavia heritage (rather tediously to be fair) but I also love Swedish folklore regardless.
The name Noctua is Latin for “night owl” but also refers to a certain type of moth so that’s the reasoning behind the name.
I’m not sure that helped at all but I hope it did a little. Good luck with you’re research! :)
Another one of the originals currently available in the sale in my Esty shop (there’s link to my shop in my “about me” section). You’ve gotta love an electric rodent! ⚡️#Illustration #FawnLorn #MattHayton #Pokemon #Dedenne #Etsy #Watercolour
Took Adams advice and decided to try sketching with my new fountain pen. Kinda like this crow dude. 🌙 #FawnLorn #MattHayton #Illustration
This is my piece from the Animystics show at Light Grey Art Lab in Minneapolis. The show opens on the 25th but they have the pieces listed in their online shop so I think I’m ok to post this here now. You can buy the original of this on there too. ✨ #Illustration #MattHayton #FawnLorn #Animystics #LightGreyArtLab #SpiritAnimal #Totem #Moth

It actually cost a small fortune to get this framed but it’s ready to ship now so I’m happy. It’s heading to Light Grey Art Lab in Minneapolis and it’s my contribution to their Animystics exhibition. It’s such a wonderful show for a great cause with lots incredible artist contributing so needless to say I’m more than honoured to be a part if it. I usually use either my Moleskine watercolour sketchbook or The Langton extra smooth (hot pressed) watercolour paper.
It’s gold leaf so it’s created by applying acrylic gold size, allowing that to try (become tacky) and then applying the gold leaf. I use gold powder as appose to traditional gold leaf as I think it gives a more uniform finish and I mask off the surround area with post it notes to keep the edges sharp/clean. I hope that made sense. :)
